Pulwama, February 10, 2026:In a significant development for apiculture in Jammu & Kashmir, the CSIR–IIIM Field Station in Pulwama has successfully reared honeybees during harsh winter conditions, ensuring the local survival of bee colonies and reducing the need for seasonal migration. This breakthrough is expected to pave the way for year-round honey production in the Valley, providing economic opportunities for local farmers and beekeepers.
Officials highlighted that the initiative strengthens sustainable apiculture, agricultural productivity, and rural livelihoods, while also contributing to pollination and ecosystem balance in the region. The successful overwintering of bee colonies represents a major step forward in boosting Kashmir’s honey industry, making it more resilient to seasonal challenges.
The project also underscores the potential of combining scientific research, local expertise, and innovation to enhance honey yield, bee health, and economic sustainability for Kashmir’s apiculture sector. Experts believe that year-round honey production can further support entrepreneurship, rural employment, and agro-based industry development in the Valley.
