Jammu, February 10, 2026:Jammu and Kashmir is set for a major boost in renewable energy as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that the hydropower capacity in the Union Territory is expected to cross 7,300 MW within the next five years. This ambitious target underscores the region’s potential as a key contributor to India’s clean energy transition and sustainable development goals.
The government highlighted ongoing and upcoming hydropower projects across Jammu & Kashmir, which include run-of-the-river schemes, storage projects, and modern power stations, aimed at enhancing energy security, reducing dependence on conventional fuels, and creating employment opportunities in the region.
Officials emphasized that this expansion aligns with national priorities on renewable energy, climate resilience, and green infrastructure development. The hydropower projects are also expected to drive local economic growth by fostering ancillary industries, skill development, and tourism in project-affected areas.
The Chief Minister called for coordinated efforts among government agencies, private developers, and local communities to ensure timely completion of ongoing projects, highlighting J&K’s commitment to sustainable energy production and inclusive growth.
