Pulwama records coldest night as Kashmir valley freezes

Pulwama, December :Pulwama district recorded the coldest night of the season, intensifying the severe cold wave across the Kashmir Valley as temperatures plunged well below freezing, disrupting daily life and increasing demand for heating and essential services.

Residents across south Kashmir reported freezing conditions, with water supply lines partially frozen in several areas and early morning movement affected by icy roads. The sharp dip in night temperatures has deepened the impact of Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period in Kashmir, marked by intense cold and sub-zero temperatures.

Meteorological officials said the prevailing dry weather and clear skies contributed to significant nocturnal cooling, leading to widespread frost formation. Other parts of the Valley, including Srinagar and north Kashmir districts, also experienced biting cold, though Pulwama emerged as the coldest spot during the night.

The prolonged cold spell has affected agriculture and horticulture, with farmers expressing concern over frost damage to standing crops and orchards. Authorities have advised residents to take necessary precautions, particularly during night and early morning hours, to avoid cold-related health issues.

Despite the extreme cold, officials said there has been no major disruption to essential services so far, with power and water departments on high alert to respond to emergencies caused by freezing temperatures.

The weather department has forecast continued cold conditions over the coming days, with the possibility of further temperature drops during night hours, keeping the Valley firmly in winter’s grip.
