Kashmir, December 3,2025-In a significant step toward safeguarding Kashmir’s centuries-old artistic legacy, the Department of Handicrafts & Handloom, Kashmir has deployed 213 Modern Charkhas across all 16 Pashmina Spinning Training Centres. This initiative aims to enhance productivity, improve working conditions for artisans, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the world-famous Pashmina hand-spinning craft.
The introduction of Modern Charkhas marks a transformative upgrade for artisans who have traditionally relied on manual spinning methods. These improved tools promise greater efficiency, consistency in yarn quality, and reduced physical strain—benefits that directly contribute to the preservation of authentic Kashmiri Pashmina.
Officials from the department emphasize that the initiative serves a dual purpose: empowering local artisans with modern equipment while protecting a cultural legacy deeply woven into the region’s identity. The move is expected to encourage more trainees to join the craft, helping maintain its relevance in a competitive global market.
By integrating tradition with technology, Kashmir takes another meaningful step in ensuring that its revered Pashmina heritage continues to flourish for generations.
