Srinagar awakens on water: ₹900 Cr metro makes Dal & Jhelum the city’s new pulse

Srinagar, 07 November 2025-In a landmark initiative for sustainable urban mobility, the Jammu & Kashmir Government has signed a ₹900 crore Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to launch Srinagar’s Water Metro — a modern, electric-hybrid ferry network across Dal Lake and River Jhelum.Announced on October 31, 2025, the project aims to decongest Srinagar’s overburdened roads, reduce vehicular pollution, boost tourism, and create new livelihood opportunities for local communities — all while preserving the ecological integrity of Kashmir’s iconic water bodies.Project Scope: 7 Routes, 18 TerminalsThe Water Metro will operate on two major waterways with seamless connectivity to residential, commercial, and tourist hubs:
