Defence Minister Rajnath Singh  flags off IASV Triveni

Kashmir, September 11, 2025 – In a significant step towards strengthening India’s maritime defence capabilities, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the flag-off ceremony of the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier Vessel (IASV) Triveni via video conferencing today. The event marks a milestone in the nation’s push for self-reliance in warship construction, underscoring the government’s commitment to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in the defence sector.

Virtual Address Highlights Strategic Importance

During his address, Rajnath Singh commended the efforts of the Indian Navy and the shipbuilding team for their dedication to indigenous production. “The commissioning of IASV Triveni represents a proud moment for our nation, enhancing our blue-water navy and ensuring strategic autonomy in the Indian Ocean region,” the Minister stated, as per official sources. He emphasized the role of such vessels in safeguarding national interests amid evolving geopolitical challenges.The ceremony was held at a key shipyard, with Singh virtually flagging off the vessel from New Delhi. IASV Triveni, named after the sacred confluence of three rivers, symbolizes unity and strength. This indigenous carrier is equipped with advanced avionics, stealth features, and the capacity to operate a diverse fleet of aircraft, including fighter jets and helicopters

Milestone for India’s Naval Modernisation

The flag-off of IASV Triveni is part of a broader initiative to indigenize 75% of defence procurement by 2025. Built under Project 71A or a similar indigenous program, the vessel joins the ranks of INS Vikrant, India’s first home-built aircraft carrier. Naval officials highlighted that Triveni will bolster India’s power projection capabilities, enabling extended operations in the Indo-Pacific.Singh also urged the defence industry to accelerate innovation in underwater and aerial domains. “Our shipyards are not just building vessels; they are forging the future of India’s security,” he added. The event was attended by top Navy brass, including the Chief of Naval Staff, and representatives from the Ministry of Defence.
