Jammu, July 17, 2025: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Vijaypur, Samba district, on Thursday, praising its rapid progress and describing it as a testament to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The state-of-the-art healthcare and academic institution, inaugurated by the Prime Minister in February 2024, is emerging as a beacon of medical excellence, serving patients from across India.
During his visit, accompanied by Adviser to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, Omar Abdullah reviewed the institute’s operations and infrastructure. Addressing AIIMS management, students, and medical staff, he stated, “The successful establishment and functioning of AIIMS is a testament to the power of will and vision. The dream of the Prime Minister has truly taken shape here.” He highlighted the institute’s potential to become one of the top AIIMS among the 23 nationwide, crediting its world-class facilities and dedicated efforts.
The Chief Minister noted that AIIMS Jammu, established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), is already catering to a daily footfall of 2,000–3,000 patients. With 750 beds, including 193 ICU beds for trauma and super-specialty care, the institute features advanced facilities like 20 modular operation theatres, round-the-clock MRI and CT scans, and a dedicated two-storey Ayush Block with 30 beds integrating traditional and modern medicine. The completion of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is expected to further enhance patient access.
Omar Abdullah released the AIIMS Jammu Manual of Disaster Management, emphasising the importance of preparedness. “We hope never to need this manual, but it’s better to have and not need than to need and not have,” he remarked, commending the institute’s proactive initiatives. He also addressed a recent assault on a doctor in a government hospital, asserting, “Doctors must work free from fear and intimidation. Strict action has been directed to ensure justice.”
Adviser Nasir Aslam Wani praised AIIMS Jammu’s eco-friendly campus, patient-friendly registration process, and high-quality treatment. Executive Director Prof. Shakti Kumar Gupta presented an overview, revealing that 82% of discharged patients are “highly satisfied” and 17% are “satisfied” with services. The institute, with 54% female faculty and nearly 80% female nursing officers, prioritises women’s empowerment through gender-sensitive policies.
The Chief Minister urged other healthcare institutions in Jammu & Kashmir to emulate AIIMS Jammu’s model and expressed hope for the swift completion of AIIMS Kashmir. The visit underscores the government’s commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure in the Union Territory, aligning with the broader vision of a Viksit Jammu & Kashmir by 2047.
