Srinagar, May 17, 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited the Tangdhar Sector along the Line of Control (LoC) to assess the devastation caused by unprovoked heavy shelling from Pakistan. The shelling, which targeted civilian areas, caused significant damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, displacing residents and disrupting lives.
During his visit, LG Sinha reviewed the administration’s damage assessment and the immediate assistance provided to affected families. “The administration has acted swiftly to support those impacted, but a few people are still awaiting rehabilitation,” Sinha said, as quoted by ANI. Expressing concern over the adequacy of current measures, he added, “I feel this help is not enough.”
To address the long-term needs of the affected communities, Sinha directed the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and senior officers to prepare a comprehensive rehabilitation plan. This plan will focus on rebuilding infrastructure, restoring livelihoods, and ensuring proper resettlement of displaced residents. The proposal will be submitted to the Government of India (GoI) to secure additional funding and resources for proper rehabilitation.
The shelling in Tangdhar followed India’s Operation Sindoor, a military strike targeting terror infrastructure across the border, prompting retaliatory fire from Pakistan. The intense bombardment forced residents to seek shelter in underground bunkers or evacuate to safer areas. The administration has prioritized clearing unexploded shells, providing medical aid, and compensating for losses, including livestock.
Sinha’s visit underscores the J&K administration’s commitment to supporting border communities. With over 9,500 bunkers already constructed along the LoC, plans are underway to build more to enhance border security. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also visited the affected areas, emphasized the need for individual bunkers and assured full compensation post-assessment.
As the situation stabilizes, the focus is on sustainable recovery. The forthcoming rehabilitation plan aims to provide lasting solutions for the residents of Tangdhar Sector and other shelling-affected areas, ensuring they can rebuild with dignity and security.
