Srinagar, April 21, 2025 – Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, on Monday allayed fears of shortages in the Kashmir Valley, confirming an ample supply of essential commodities, including LPG, diesel, and petrol, despite recent landslides and road closures. The announcement underscores the J&K administration’s efforts to ensure stability and public confidence during a challenging weather spell.
Addressing concerns sparked by disruptions on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) and Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road, Bidhuri detailed the Valley’s reserves: 17 days of LPG, 12,500 kilolitres of diesel (12–13 days’ supply at 1,000 kilolitres daily), and 10,000 kilolitres of petrol .He also highlighted a year-long stock of food grains, ensuring food security across districts. “The supply chain is robust, and there’s no need for panic buying. We urge residents to trust official updates,” Bidhuri said, as quoted by Rising Kashmir.
The statement follows a massive landslide at Zojila Pass on April 20 and flash floods in Ramban, which have strained connectivity and raised fears of supply disruptions. The Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, predicts continued rain and snowfall through April 22, prompting the Border Roads Organisation to expedite debris clearance on affected routes. Bidhuri’s assurance builds on proactive measures, including October 2024 directives to stockpile essentials in remote areas like Kupwara and Gurez.
Local residents, particularly in urban centres like Srinagar and Anantnag, expressed relief, with shopkeepers reporting stabilised demand after initial rushes at fuel stations. “The government’s clarity helps us plan better and avoid hoarding,” said a Srinagar retailer.
The J&K administration, under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is coordinating with district officials to monitor stock levels and ensure equitable distribution. Bidhuri’s track record of managing supply crises, such as during the 2024 transporter strike, reinforces confidence in the region’s resilience.
