Jammu and Kashmir, April 19, 2025 – In a groundbreaking move for women’s empowerment, the free bus service launched on April 1, 2025, in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an overwhelming response, with over 3.5 lakh women utilizing the initiative within its first week. The scheme, designed to enhance women’s mobility, promote gender equality, and ensure inclusive growth, has doubled daily ridership on electric buses, recording nearly 50,000 women passengers daily.
The Jammu Smart City Limited and Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation operate the service, covering 95 air-conditioned e-buses across 30+ routes in Jammu and Kashmir. The free travel initiative allows women to board by presenting their Aadhaar card, ensuring seamless access to safe transportation. Peak travel times include 8-10 AM, midday, and 4-6 PM, reflecting the service’s alignment with women’s daily routines.
This women-centric program has been lauded for improving accessibility, fostering economic participation, and enhancing public transport safety. Local authorities highlight its role in supporting sustainable urban mobility through eco-friendly e-buses, contributing to both social empowerment and environmental sustainability.
