SONAMARG, JANUARY 11: Ahead of the formal inauguration of the Sonamarg Tunnel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah conducted a detailed review of preparations at the project site in Sonamarg, Ganderbal district.
Accompanied by Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and MLA Kangan Mian Mehar Ali, the Chief Minister was briefed by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri on the comprehensive arrangements for the inauguration of the strategic 6.4 km tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh Highway.
CM Abdullah inspected the tunnel tubes and engaged with the engineers and workers involved in its construction, commending their hard work in bringing this critical infrastructure project to completion. He also visited the venue where PM Modi will address a public gathering and formally dedicate the tunnel to the nation.
Reflecting on the project’s impact, CM Abdullah emphasized the transformative potential of the Sonamarg Tunnel. “This tunnel will ensure all-weather connectivity to Sonamarg, a region known for its natural beauty. It will not only boost tourism but also enhance the economic prospects of the area,” he stated.
The Chief Minister highlighted his vision of positioning Ganderbal as a premier winter sports destination, alongside Gulmarg, with the Sonamarg Tunnel acting as a key enabler. “By providing year-round access to Sonamarg, the tunnel will complement Gulmarg’s status as a skiing and winter sports hub, creating new opportunities for tourism and regional growth,” he added.
The Sonamarg Tunnel, a milestone in improving connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, will facilitate uninterrupted access to Sonamarg, ensuring both strategic mobility and a major boost to the region’s tourism and economic development.
