Umeed-Ka-Zaika cafe in Kulgam emerges as symbol of women empowerment and self-reliance

Kulgam, May 22,2026- “Umeed-Ka-Zaika,” a canteen-cum-café operated by women under the UMEED-NRLM scheme, is emerging as a shining example of self-reliance, women empowerment, and grassroots entrepreneurship in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

The initiative, launched under the UMEED–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), is providing sustainable livelihood opportunities to local women by enabling them to manage and operate the café independently. The café offers a variety of traditional and modern food items while promoting local flavours and community participation.

Run entirely by women self-help group members, the café has become a source of inspiration for many aspiring entrepreneurs in the region. Besides generating income, the venture is helping women gain confidence, financial independence, and practical business experience.

Officials associated with the scheme said the initiative reflects the growing success of women-led enterprises in Jammu and Kashmir and showcases how government-backed livelihood programmes are transforming rural communities.

Local residents and visitors have appreciated the quality of food and hospitality at the café, which is gradually becoming a popular community space in Kulgam. Women associated with the venture said the platform has helped them support their families and become financially independent.

The UMEED scheme aims to strengthen rural livelihoods through self-help groups, skill development, and entrepreneurship opportunities for women across Jammu and Kashmir.

“Umeed-Ka-Zaika” now stands as a symbol of empowerment and economic progress, highlighting the changing role of women in rural entrepreneurship and local economic development.
