UMEED Bishnah leads women’s Agribusiness

Jammu, Jammu & Kashmir: The UMEED Bishnah Women Producer Company Limited, established under UMEED–JKRLM in Bishnah block of Jammu district, is emerging as a successful model of women-led collective farming and agribusiness, empowering rural women through structured economic participation and sustainable agricultural practices.

The Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) comprises 513 women farmer shareholders, who have collectively mobilized ₹6.69 lakh in shareholder equity. In addition, the organization has received a ₹1.83 lakh matching equity grant and ₹9.41 lakh in management support, strengthening its operational and financial capacity.

Through coordinated efforts in collective procurement, aggregation, and marketing of agricultural produce, the FPO has achieved an impressive annual turnover of ₹21.09 lakh, reflecting the growing success of women-led rural enterprises in the region.

The initiative is playing a transformative role in improving market access for women farmers, enabling them to secure better prices for their produce and reduce dependency on intermediaries. It is also contributing to increased household incomes and enhanced financial stability for rural families.

Beyond economic gains, the program focuses on building skills in modern cultivation practices, post-harvest management, value addition, and enterprise development, equipping women farmers with the knowledge required to scale up agricultural businesses.

Officials associated with UMEED–JKRLM (Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission) stated that such women producer companies are vital for strengthening rural livelihoods and promoting self-reliance among women in agriculture-based communities.

The success of the Bishnah FPO highlights the growing impact of women empowerment initiatives in Jammu & Kashmir, serving as a replicable model for sustainable agribusiness development across rural India.
