Udhampur, September 12, 2025: In a heartwarming display of community solidarity, residents of Udhampur and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have stepped up to provide essential food supplies to hundreds of truck drivers stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44). The highway, a vital lifeline connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India, has been severely damaged by relentless heavy rainfall and subsequent landslides, leaving vehicles immobilized and commuters in distress. The crisis escalated over the past week, with massive landslides in areas like Tharad, Balli Nallah, and Shalgadi washing away sections of the road and retaining walls, as reported by authorities.
Temporary restoration efforts were repeatedly thwarted by continuous downpours, forcing the complete closure of the 250-km stretch between Udhampur and Banihal since early September. Over 500 trucks and heavy vehicles remain stuck, with drivers facing acute shortages of food and water amid the ongoing blockade.Local volunteers, including members from NGOs such as the Udhampur Relief Committee and Kashmir Humanitarian Aid, have organized impromptu distribution drives at key stranding points near Tharad Village and Cafeteria Morh. Hot meals, packed rations, and bottled water are being supplied daily, with contributions pouring in from nearby villages and urban donors.
“These drivers are the unsung heroes keeping our supply chains alive; it’s our duty to support them in their hour of need,” said Rajesh Kumar, a local coordinator involved in the relief efforts.Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently inspected the damage in Udhampur, emphasizing accelerated restoration work under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). While alternate routes like the Mughal Road remain partially operational for light vehicles, heavy traffic on NH-44 is expected to resume only after weather stabilisation and full repairs. The incident highlights the vulnerability of the region’s infrastructure to extreme weather, underscoring the need for resilient engineering solutions. This grassroots initiative not only alleviates immediate hardships but also exemplifies the resilient spirit of J&K’s people in the face of natural adversities.
