Udhampur, March 15,2026- The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has successfully completed the construction of two strategic underpasses at Sangoor Chowk and Gole Mela Chowk in Udhampur along the National Highway 44, the vital Jammu–Srinagar National Highway. The new infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety in the busy town.
For years, Sangoor Chowk and Gole Mela Chowk were considered accident-prone zones due to heavy traffic movement and frequent bottlenecks on the highway. With the completion of the underpasses, commuters can now move smoothly without interruptions, easing daily travel for thousands of vehicles passing through Udhampur.
Local resident Bishan Sharma welcomed the development and appreciated the government’s initiative. “Two new underpasses have recently been constructed at Sangoor Chowk and Gole Mela Chowk, benefiting many commuters. Earlier, these areas witnessed frequent accidents and several fatalities due to traffic congestion. With the completion of these underpasses, traffic flow has improved and accidents have been significantly reduced,” he said.
He also expressed hope that similar infrastructure projects would be implemented in other busy areas to enhance road safety and convenience for the public.
The completion of these underpasses is part of ongoing efforts to upgrade infrastructure along NH-44, which serves as the main road link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the Jammu region and the rest of the country. Authorities believe that such improvements will not only streamline traffic movement but also strengthen connectivity and support economic activity across the region.
