Tree plantation drive boosts green efforts in Tithwal and Simari

Kashmir I March 18, 2025 – A vibrant tree plantation drive took place in the border villages of Tithwal and Simari as part of the nationwide #EkPedMaaKeNaam campaign, aimed at honouring mothers while nurturing Mother Earth. The event, held in the Karnah sector of Kupwara district along the Line of Control , saw over 300 enthusiastic schoolchildren join hands with community leaders, the Indian Army, and the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department to plant saplings and foster environmental awareness.

The initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day 2024, encourages citizens to plant trees as a tribute to their mothers, blending cultural reverence with ecological responsibility. In Tithwal and Simari, the drive transformed the landscape as young hands dug into the soil, planting saplings with zeal and determination. The participation of schoolchildren underscored the campaign’s focus on instilling a sense of environmental stewardship in the next generation.

Organized collaboratively by the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps, the J&K Forest Department, and local education authorities, the event brought together Forest Ranger Tangdhar, SHO Tithwal, and other officials who inspired the youth to protect nature. The children, guided by their teachers and community leaders, planted a variety of saplings suited to the region’s climate, contributing to afforestation efforts in these remote border areas.

“This is more than just planting trees—it’s about building a sustainable future and teaching our children the value of caring for our planet,” said a senior official involved in the drive. The initiative also aligns with broader goals of combating climate change and enhancing green cover in Jammu and Kashmir, a region known for its ecological significance.

The schoolchildren’s enthusiasm was palpable as they worked alongside soldiers and forest officials, learning about the importance of trees in maintaining ecological balance. “I planted a tree for my mother today, and it feels good to do something for nature,” shared one young participant, echoing the campaign’s heartfelt sentiment.

The #EkPedMaaKeNaam campaign has already seen remarkable success nationwide, with millions of saplings planted since its inception. Today’s event in Tithwal and Simari adds to this momentum, showcasing how even remote communities can play a vital role in environmental conservation. As the saplings take root, they symbolize hope, responsibility, and a greener tomorrow for these border villages.
