Transit accommodation is being constructed in Balapora, Shopian for Kashmiri Pandits. To make the Kashmiri Pandits return to their homeland, the government under the scheme Prime Minister’s Development Package (PDMP) is constructing flats for their living. Zafar Hussain, Executive Engineer R&B says around 196 pandits can stay in these accommodations. The LG government and the DC Shopian have taken this important step so that our pandit brothers who were living outside the UT can come back and stay here. The government has identified 19 locations in the Valley to construct 6000 flats for their transit accommodation. In Phase I, one hundred and ninety-two flats have to be constructed . There are 12 blocks and in each block there are 16 flats. Two blocks are complete. The next two blocks require minor finishing work which will be done in the next 10-15 days, said Sachin Kumar, Dy. Commissioner, Shopian. He said around 64 flats are ready for the pandits to move in. Arrangement for water and electricity has been provided. The construction work for this transit accommodation started in the year 2020 which is in progress. Work in more flats is going on in full swing. We are targeting that by next April/May and maximum by June 2023 the 192 flats of Phase I will be ready, said the Dy. Commissioner, Shopian. Work on Phase II has also started with the foundation work being done. It is the priority of the Central Government and the J&K LG administration. Hence, construction work is going at a fast pace. The aim is to provide convenience to people, said Dy. Commissioner, Shopian. The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha shared that he had met a lot of people in Kashmir who regret the fact that Kashmiri Pandits had to leave their homes in Kashmir. The Kashmiri residents told the LG that the Kashmiri Pandits were our brothers just like our family members.The LG said, a different type of environment is being created. With the cooperation of everyone, definitely and respectfully the return of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley will take place.
