Tral | Preserving Heritage | Generations Carry Forward the Legacy of ‘Pani Chakki’ | Rural Tradition This ‘pani chakki’ in Tral, Jammu & Kashmir is from my grandfather and father’s time. My father was running this water chakki. But since two-and-a-half years because of his illness, now I have taken it up. This chakki grinds sattu, makki atta or rice flour. This way the sattu or flour becomes tasty and it is good for health. Electric chakki or rice cooker is not good as compared to the food cooked by a wooden stove. We make packs of 5kg and half kg with it. All the villagers nearby come here for fresh grounded flour. When the water flow goes low then the chakki is not able to function throughout the year. Today the flow is less, so we cannot grind atta, we can make just rice sattu not even maize sattu. It is difficult in winters during snow. I give this work importance because it has been there since my father and grandfather’s time. I will continue this during my lifetime and I will teach my children also and pass on the legacy of ‘pani chakki’.
