Tesla charges into India: First showroom to spark in Mumbai’s BKC

Mumbai,March 2,2025- Tesla has finalised a deal to establish its inaugural showroom in India at Mumbai’s upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a prominent business hub. The showroom will occupy a 4,000-square-foot space on the ground floor of a commercial tower, secured through a five-year lease.

Tesla will pay a monthly rent of approximately ₹35 lakh (around ₹900 per square foot), making it one of the highest rental rates for commercial property in the area. This move marks a significant step in Tesla’s long-anticipated entry into the Indian market.

The decision follows a meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States just weeks ago, signaling renewed momentum for Tesla’s India plans. Alongside the Mumbai showroom, Tesla is reportedly working on a second location in Delhi’s Aerocity, further expanding its footprint.

The company has also posted job listings for 13 positions in India, including roles in sales and customer service, hinting at an imminent launch, possibly within the coming months.
While Tesla has not confirmed an exact opening date, the BKC showroom is expected to showcase its electric vehicle lineup, starting with imported models like the Model 3 and Model Y.

Pricing speculation suggests a starting range of ₹21 lakh (about $25,000), though final costs will depend on import duties and government incentives. Tesla currently sources over a billion dollars’ worth of components from India annually, a figure projected to grow, though no manufacturing plant has been confirmed yet.

This development has sparked excitement in India’s growing electric vehicle market, though challenges like high import tariffs remain a point of discussion. Musk has previously advocated for reduced duties to make Tesla’s vehicles more accessible in India. For now, the BKC showroom positions Tesla to tap into Mumbai’s affluent market, setting the stage for its broader ambitions in the country.
