Jammu, March 12, 2025- The ambitious Tawi Riverfront project in Jammu is advancing at a brisk pace, with officials reporting significant strides toward its completion. Initiated to transform the banks of the Tawi River into a vibrant tourism and recreational hub, the project’s first phase is now slated for completion by April 2025, according to statements made in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly yesterday.
Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Ahmad Rana, highlighted that the ₹143 crore project has achieved 96% completion on the left bank and 94% on the right bank as of March 11, 2025. The Tawi Barrage, a key component creating an artificial lake, is 85% complete, promising to enhance the aesthetic and ecological value of the riverfront. Modeled after Gujarat’s Sabarmati Riverfront, the development aims to boost Jammu’s tourism potential while providing sustainable urban infrastructure.
Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha, who last reviewed the project on November 25, 2024, had directed officials to ensure the timely completion of Phase 1 by January 2025. While that deadline has shifted slightly, the accelerated efforts reflect a renewed commitment to meeting the revised April timeline. “This project will not only beautify Jammu but also create economic opportunities for local communities,” Sinha had noted during an earlier inspection.
The Tawi Riverfront, conceptualized decades ago in 1986, has faced numerous delays due to political and logistical challenges. However, under the Jammu Smart City initiative, it is finally taking shape, with features like recreational spaces, commercial zones, and green areas designed to rejuvenate the river’s ecosystem. Local residents and tourism stakeholders are optimistic, anticipating a significant uplift to the region’s appeal once completed.
With the finish line in sight, the administration remains focused on overcoming the final hurdles to deliver this long-awaited project to the people of Jammu by next month.
