Kulgam, January 1,2026-The much-awaited Sukharsam Bridge at Khudwani in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district is nearing completion, with nearly 90 per cent of the construction work completed under fast-track mode, officials said. The bridge is expected to significantly improve connectivity and give a major push to the local economy once it becomes operational.
The strategic bridge will connect around 30 villages to the National Highway, easing traffic congestion and reducing travel time for commuters in the region. It will also serve as a crucial route for the transportation of apples and other horticulture produce from Shopian, benefiting thousands of orchardists and traders.
Officials said the project has been prioritised to ensure timely completion, keeping in view its importance for rural connectivity, agriculture and emergency movement. The bridge is expected to decongest existing routes and provide a safer and more reliable alternative for daily commuters.
Local residents have welcomed the progress, calling it a long-pending demand that will improve access to markets, healthcare facilities and educational institutions. The improved infrastructure is also expected to strengthen trade, tourism and overall development in the Kulgam–Shopian belt.
The nearing completion of the Sukharsam Bridge highlights the government’s focus on infrastructure development, aimed at enhancing connectivity, supporting the apple economy and accelerating growth in south Kashmir.
