Srinagar’s Tulip Garden preparing for opening targets record visitors

Preparations are in full swing for the much-anticipated opening of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, recognized as Asia’s largest tulip garden. Nestled between the picturesque Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Hills, the garden is set to welcome visitors later this month with a stunning display of tulips in full bloom. Spanning 30 hectares, the garden has been a cornerstone of Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism and floricultural heritage since its establishment in 2007. It has become a popular destination, extending the region’s tourist season beyond the traditional summer and winter months. This year, the Floriculture Department is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a spectacular experience, with workers meticulously tending to the garden and planting tulip bulbs in phases to prolong the blooming period, typically lasting over a month.

The garden’s growing appeal is evident in its impressive visitor statistics. Last year, it attracted 4.65 lakh visitors during its brief 25- to 30-day opening window, a notable jump from the 3.65 lakh visitors recorded in 2023. Authorities are optimistic about an even higher turnout this season. “Last year, 4.65 lakh visitors came to the garden. This year, we hope the numbers will exceed last year’s,” said Asif Ahmad, Assistant Floriculture Officer of the Tulip Garden. The expected surge in tourism is attributed to the garden’s enhanced offerings and increased promotional efforts. This season, visitors can look forward to over 1.7 million tulips across 73 varieties, including two newly introduced types. The garden will also feature complementary blooms like hyacinths, daffodils, and ranunculus, adding to its vibrant allure.

Beyond the flowers, the garden’s scenic location offers breathtaking views of the Dal Lake and Zabarwan Range, making it a photographer’s paradise. Visitors will also benefit from amenities such as pure drinking water, washrooms, free Wi-Fi, and well-maintained picnic spots. Strategically located just 17 kilometers from Sheikh ul Alam International Airport and 18 kilometers from Srinagar Railway Station, the garden is easily accessible by taxi or local transport, with a travel time of approximately 30 minutes from the airport. Its proximity to other attractions, including the Mughal Gardens and Shankaracharya Temple, further enhances its appeal as a must-visit destination.

As preparations reach their final stages, excitement is mounting among locals and tourists alike. The opening of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is more than a celebration of nature—it underscores Srinagar’s efforts to promote tourism and stimulate economic growth. With expectations of record-breaking visitor numbers this year, the garden is poised to reaffirm its status as a premier global attraction. Travel enthusiasts and gardening aficionados are encouraged to plan their visit and experience the magic of Asia’s largest tulip garden in full bloom.
