Srinagar, April 21, 2025 – The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Asia’s largest tulip garden and a premier tourist attraction in Srinagar, will close to the public from the evening of April 24, 2025, as announced by the Directorate of Floriculture, Kashmir. The decision comes as the tulip bloom, which has drawn thousands of visitors since its opening on March 26, is nearing its end for the season.
Nestled between Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Hills, the 74-acre garden has showcased over 1.7 million tulip bulbs across 74 varieties this year, alongside other spring flowers like hyacinths, daffodils, and muscari. The Tulip Show 2025, inaugurated by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, marked the start of Kashmir’s tourism season, attracting domestic and international visitors with its vibrant floral display. However, with the tulip lifecycle typically lasting 20–25 days and influenced by rising temperatures, authorities have opted to close the garden to prepare for next season’s planting.
“The tulip bloom is almost over, and we will close the garden from April 24 to begin maintenance and bulb planting for 2026,” said an official from the Floriculture Department, as reported by Kashmir News Observer. The department plants bulbs in phases to extend the bloom period, but warmer weather has accelerated the fading of flowers, prompting the closure.
The announcement has sparked a rush among tourists and locals to visit the garden in its final days, with only two days remaining to witness the colorful spectacle. The garden’s closure aligns with its annual cycle, established since its inception in 2007 by then-Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to boost floriculture and tourism. This year’s season saw added attractions, including two new tulip varieties and a refreshed color scheme, enhancing its appeal.
Tourism stakeholders expressed gratitude for the garden’s role in elevating Srinagar’s global profile. “The Tulip Garden has been a magnet for visitors, showcasing Kashmir’s natural beauty,” said a local tour operator. Visitors are advised to plan their trips promptly and adhere to guidelines, including avoiding unauthorised photographers, as cautioned by the Floriculture Department earlier this month.
