Srinagar’s iconic Amira Kadal bridge nears completion, set to boost tourism and employment

Srinagar, March 24, 2025 – Srinagar’s historic Amira Kadal Bridge, a vital artery in the heart of the city’s bustling Lal Chowk area, is poised to transform into a cultural and scenic landmark as construction nears its final stages. With 90% of the work completed, officials from the Srinagar Smart City Limited announced on Monday that the revamped pedestrian footbridge will soon open to the public, promising to enhance urban mobility while boosting tourism and local employment opportunities.

The Amira Kadal Bridge, originally built in the late 19th century by Maharaja Pratap Singh and named after his wife, has long been a symbol of Srinagar’s rich history. Under the ambitious Srinagar Smart City project, the bridge has undergone a significant facelift, blending modern design with its traditional wooden aesthetic. Inspired by the iconic Rajbagh wooden bridge, the structure aims to preserve Kashmir’s architectural heritage while catering to contemporary needs.

Dr. Owais Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer of Srinagar Smart City, shared updates on the project’s progress during a press briefing . “We are thrilled to announce that 90% of the work on the Amira Kadal pedestrian bridge is complete. This is not just a bridge—it’s a gateway to Srinagar’s cultural soul and scenic beauty. Once opened, it will serve as a major attraction for tourists and a source of pride for locals,” he said.

The revamped bridge, spanning the Jhelum River, connects the commercial hub of Lal Chowk with Hari Singh High Street, offering pedestrians stunning views of the river and the surrounding Chinar-lined landscape. Its strategic location near landmarks like the Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) and bustling markets positions it as a potential hotspot for visitors exploring Srinagar’s vibrant downtown.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the project is expected to have a tangible economic impact. “The bridge will generate employment opportunities, both directly through its maintenance and indirectly by drawing more tourists to the area,” Dr. Ahmed noted. Local shopkeepers, artisans, and tourism stakeholders anticipate a surge in foot traffic, revitalising businesses that have faced challenges in recent years. The initiative aligns with the Jammu and Kashmir government’s broader push to promote tourism, which saw over 23.5 million visitors in 2024, according to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent statements.

The construction, which began as part of the Smart City initiative, faced delays due to logistical hurdles, including the relocation of shops along the riverbank. However, with these issues resolved in collaboration with the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), the project has regained momentum. The remaining 10% of the work—final touches to the railings, lighting, and landscaping—is expected to conclude within weeks, with an official opening slated for mid-2025.

Residents and tourists alike have expressed excitement about the bridge’s transformation. “It’s wonderful to see our heritage being preserved while making Srinagar more accessible and beautiful,” said Aijaz Mir, a local vendor near Lal Chowk. Meanwhile, Priya Sharma, a tourist from Delhi, added, “I can’t wait to walk across and capture the views. It’ll be a perfect addition to Srinagar’s charm.”

The Amira Kadal Bridge project is part of a larger vision to modernise Srinagar while celebrating its cultural and natural assets. With floating jetties along the Jhelum River and other tourism-focused initiatives underway, the city is positioning itself as a must-visit destination. As the bridge nears completion, it stands as a testament to Srinagar’s ability to blend tradition with progress, promising a brighter future for its people and visitors alike.
