Srinagar, September 28, 2025 – In a vibrant display of fitness, unity, and community spirit, the Great Cyclothonorganized by the Department of Labour & Employment and the Department of Youth Services & Sports roared to life in Srinagar today. Over 1,000 enthusiastic cyclists, spanning diverse age groups and backgrounds, pedaled through the city’s scenic routes, starting from the historic Bakshi Stadium and culminating triumphantly at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC). The event, themed “Pedal for Peace,” not only celebrated physical well-being but also underscored the transformative power of healthy lifestyles and initiatives like Mission YUVA.Flagged off amid cheers and the rhythmic chime of bicycle bells, the cyclothon traversed Srinagar’s picturesque lanes, lined with cheering spectators, hydration stations, and dedicated volunteers ensuring participant safety. The route highlighted the region’s natural beauty, from the lush greens near Bakshi Stadium to the iconic waterfront views approaching SKICC, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among riders. Families, students, and fitness enthusiasts joined in, turning the streets into a sea of spinning wheels and waving flags.
A key highlight was the address by Mr. Waseem Raja, a prominent figure in youth development and sports advocacy in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Raja emphasized the event’s deeper significance: “This cyclothon is more than a race; it’s a call to embrace healthy lifestyles that build resilience and harmony in our society. By promoting fitness, we’re not just strengthening bodies but empowering minds for a brighter future.” He drew special attention to Mission YUVA (Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan), the ambitious government initiative launched earlier this year by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, aimed at creating 1.37 lakh enterprises and 4.25 lakh jobs over five years. “Mission YUVA is our roadmap to youth empowerment,” Raja added, urging participants to channel their energy into entrepreneurial pursuits alongside physical fitness. The collaboration between the two departments marks a strategic push to integrate employment opportunities with sports and wellness programs, aligning with broader goals of societal resilience and peace-building. Organizers distributed prizes, including free cycles to the youngest and most spirited participants, while awareness stalls at SKICC highlighted anti-drug campaigns and vocational training under Mission YUVA.
One young rider, Aisha from a local college, shared her excitement: “Pedaling for peace felt incredible—it’s inspiring to see how sports can connect us and open doors to new careers.”As the sun set over Dal Lake, the event concluded with cultural performances and a group pledge for sustained fitness and entrepreneurship. Officials announced this cyclothon as the kickoff to a series of upcoming activities, including marathons, yoga camps, and skill workshops, promising to keep Srinagar buzzing with positive momentum. In an era where youth aspirations meet real-world challenges, this Great Cyclothon stands as a beacon of hope, proving that a simple pedal stroke can propel an entire community toward progress and prosperity.
