Srinagar, May 2, 2025: In a decisive move to combat drug trafficking and dismantle the illegal narcotics network in the region, Srinagar Police has booked four notorious drug peddlers under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS Act). The detained individuals have been lodged in jails across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The drug peddlers, identified as Ashiq Ahmad Badyari, son of Abdul Hamid Badyari, resident of Boatman Colony, Bemina; Arbaz Irshad Sheikh, son of Late Irshad Sheikh, resident of Qamarabad, Qamarwari; Ubair Mushtaq, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, resident of SDA Colony, Bemina; and Waseem Ahmad Bhat, son of Abdul Rashid Bhat, resident of Dangerpora, Elahibagh, were booked under the PIT-NDPS Act. Formal detention orders were obtained from the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, based on detailed dossiers prepared by Srinagar Police. Following their detention, the accused were shifted to Kot Balwal Jail in Jammu and District Jail in Udhampur.
According to police reports, these individuals were actively involved in peddling narcotics, particularly targeting the youth of Srinagar on a large scale. They were also implicated in multiple cases registered under the NDPS Act across various police stations in the city. Despite being granted bail in previous cases, the peddlers continued their illegal activities, brazenly promoting drug abuse in the valley, especially in Srinagar, through their illicit narcotics network.
Srinagar Police has initiated the process to attach the properties of these peddlers under the provisions of the PIT-NDPS Act, further tightening the noose around their operations. The police have been systematically targeting the illegal narcotics infrastructure in Srinagar, with numerous drug peddlers already detained under the same act.
Reaffirming its commitment to eradicating drug peddling in the region, J&K Police stated, “We will use the full might of the law to eliminate this menace. Those engaged in such unlawful activities are warned that the long arm of the law will catch up with them sooner than they expect, and every offender will face justice.”
The police have urged citizens to report any information about drug dealers or peddlers in Srinagar via the official helpline number 9596770550. “Together, we can build a safer and healthier society,” the statement added.
This crackdown is part of Srinagar Police’s ongoing efforts to curb the drug menace and protect the youth from the devastating effects of narcotics, ensuring a robust response to the growing challenge of drug trafficking in the region.
