Srinagar, July 16, 2025: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a critical weather advisory warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslide risks across Jammu and Kashmir from July 16–17 and July 21–23, 2025. The advisory, released on Wednesday, urges residents and authorities to remain vigilant due to potential weather-related disruptions in the Union Territory.
According to Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the MET Centre, the region will experience generally cloudy skies with intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers at many places during these periods. “Intense showers and isolated incidents of heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely, particularly on July 16–17 and July 21–23,” Dr. Ahmad stated. From July 18–20, scattered to fairly widespread areas are expected to receive light to moderate rain, with the possibility of localized intense showers.
The advisory highlights risks of flash floods in vulnerable areas, along with landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in hilly terrains and along major highways, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay alert. The Srinagar district administration has issued specific warnings for those near the Jhelum River, its tributaries, and other water bodies, urging tourists, Shikara riders, and boat operators to refrain from activities on Dal Lake and other water bodies until conditions improve.
Recent rainfall has already brought relief from a prolonged heatwave, with Kulgam recording 19.2 mm, Pahalgam 16.6 mm, Gulmarg 17.2 mm, and Udhampur 46 mm in the past 24 hours. Authorities have been directed to implement precautionary measures to ensure public safety and minimise disruptions, particularly along national highways and in mountainous regions
The MET Centre advises the public to stay updated with official bulletins and contact emergency services, such as the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) or Police Control Room, in case of emergencies. The advisory aligns with efforts to mitigate risks associated with extreme weather events in J&K, especially during the monsoon season.
