Sonmarg, February 14,2026 – Director Tourism Syed Kamar Sajad on Friday flagged off the 10th National Snow Shoe Championship at Sonamarg, marking a major winter sports event in the Valley.
As many as 178 athletes from 20 states across the country are participating in the championship, competing on the pristine snow-covered slopes of Sonamarg. The event has drawn sports enthusiasts, officials and spectators, further strengthening Jammu and Kashmir’s position as an emerging winter sports destination.
Addressing the gathering, the Director Tourism said the championship reflects the changing identity of Kashmir, highlighting sports, spirit and celebration as the new face of #BadaltaKashmir. He emphasised that such national-level events not only promote adventure and winter sports but also boost tourism and generate local employment.
Officials from the Tourism Department noted that Sonamarg’s natural terrain and snow conditions provide an ideal setting for snowshoe competitions, attracting athletes from across India. The event is expected to enhance the region’s visibility on the national sports calendar while contributing to the local economy through increased tourist footfall.
Participants expressed excitement about competing in Kashmir’s scenic landscape, praising the arrangements and hospitality. Organisers said the championship aims to promote snow sports culture, encourage youth participation and showcase the Valley’s potential as a premier winter sports hub.
