Srinagar, January 29,2026-Fresh snowfall across the Kashmir Valley, coupled with a sharp rise in tourist arrivals, is providing a significant boost to the region’s economy, revitalising local businesses and strengthening livelihoods dependent on tourism.
The increased footfall has benefitted a wide range of sectors, including hotels, houseboats, restaurants, transport services and handicraft businesses. At the grassroots level, the impact is being felt most strongly by ponywalas, tourist guides, sledge riders and small vendors, many of whom rely on the winter tourism season for their primary income.
Popular destinations such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Srinagar have witnessed heightened activity following recent snowfall, drawing tourists eager to experience snow-covered landscapes and winter sports. The surge has translated into higher occupancy rates in hotels and increased demand for local services.
According to official data, Jammu and Kashmir welcomed 1.61 crore tourists in 2025, reflecting a strong recovery of the tourism sector and signalling renewed economic momentum in the Union Territory. The figures underline growing confidence among travellers and improved perceptions regarding safety and infrastructure in the region.
Stakeholders believe that sustained tourist inflow will further strengthen employment opportunities, support traditional occupations and contribute to inclusive growth across urban and rural areas of Kashmir.
The revival of tourism continues to play a pivotal role in driving economic resilience and prosperity in the Valley.
