Gulmarg, March 01, 2025 – Authorities in Gulmarg have launched extensive snow clearance operations following heavy snowfall that blanketed the region overnight, triggering road closures and affecting access to this popular tourist destination in Jammu & Kashmir. The fresh snow, which began late Friday, February 28, has transformed Gulmarg into a winter wonderland but has also posed challenges for locals and visitors alike.
Teams from the Mechanical & Hospital Engineering Department, in coordination with the Gulmarg Development Authority, are working tirelessly to clear key roads, including the Gulmarg-Tangmarg route, a vital artery for tourists and residents. Equipped with snow ploughs, snow cats, and heavy loaders, the crews are prioritizing major pathways to ensure accessibility despite the ongoing weather conditions. “Our manpower and machinery are fully deployed to manage the snow accumulation and keep Gulmarg open for everyone,” said a local official involved in the operations.
The heavy snowfall, which accumulated up to 33 cm in some areas according to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, also led to the temporary suspension of gondola services on Thursday, February 27, due to safety concerns at Kongdoori and Affarwat phases. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with posts on X indicating that snowslides and avalanches have been reported above Phase 1, though no loss of life has been confirmed.
Tourist spots like Gulmarg and Sonamarg remain focal points for these efforts, as the region continues to attract visitors eager to experience its snowy landscapes. The operations come amid forecasts of additional light snow through the weekend, underscoring the urgency of maintaining clear routes. Local officials have urged travelers to exercise caution and adhere to advisories while the clearance work progresses.
As Jammu & Kashmir braces for more winter weather, the snow clearance operations in Gulmarg highlight the region’s commitment to balancing natural beauty with practical accessibility, ensuring that its charm remains within reach for all.
