Budgam, February 13,2026– In a major push to promote traditional crafts and empower local artisans, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has reported that 559 training centers across the Union Territory have imparted craft skills over the past two years. Over 3,900 artisans in Budgam have benefited from these skill development programes, enhancing both livelihoods and the region’s handicraft heritage.
Strengthening Traditional Craftsmanship
The training centres provide hands-on instruction in weaving, embroidery, papier-mache, woodcraft, carpet-making, and other regional art forms. Artisans are also trained in modern design techniques, quality control, and market trends to ensure their products meet contemporary demand while retaining traditional appeal.
Officials highlighted that these initiatives not only preserve Jammu and Kashmir’s rich handicraft culture but also create sustainable income opportunities for local communities.
Economic Empowerment and Youth Participation
The programme enables artisans to access local, national, and international markets, boosting earnings and promoting self-reliance. Special focus is also being placed on encouraging youth participation, ensuring that traditional skills are passed down to the next generation.
Authorities noted that such craft skill development initiatives complement efforts to promote cultural tourism and handicraft promotion in the region, attracting tourists and providing economic opportunities through exhibitions, fairs, and online marketplaces.
With over 3,900 artisans trained in Budgam alone, the government’s sustained investment in craft skill development is strengthening the Union Territory’s cultural identity while fostering inclusive economic growth.
