Shopian , June 10,2026-In a proud moment for Jammu & Kashmir, Waseem Ahmad Bakshi from Shopian has been selected for the Indian Para Cricket Team, marking a significant milestone in his sporting career and bringing recognition to the district on the national stage.
Waseem, the son of Mohammad Sadiq Bakshi, a labourer from Cheki Diaroo Drangnar village in Shopian, recently met Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Shishir Gupta, at the Mini Secretariat following his selection. The Deputy Commissioner congratulated the young athlete and expressed hope that his achievement would inspire more youth, particularly persons with disabilities, to pursue sports with determination and confidence.
A dedicated para-athlete, Waseem has been representing Jammu & Kashmir in national-level para cricket tournaments since 2021. His consistent performances and commitment to the sport have earned him a place in the Indian Para Cricket Team, opening the door to upcoming international competitions.
Apart from excelling in para cricket, Waseem has also made a mark in athletics. He recently represented Jammu & Kashmir at the 24th National Para Athletics Championship 2026 held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, where he was the sole participant from Kashmir. Earlier, he won two bronze medals at a major sporting event in Uttarakhand and secured a gold medal in the 100-metre race during the Vyom Apple Fest in 2023. He has also won multiple medals at the inter-college level.
Waseem’s journey from a remote village in Shopian to earning a place in the national para cricket squad reflects perseverance, resilience, and hard work. His success stands as an inspiration for aspiring athletes across Jammu & Kashmir and highlights the growing talent emerging from the region.
