Srinagar, June 18, 2025 – The tranquil waters of Dal Lake came alive today as the Apni Party, under the leadership of Altaf Bukhari, organized a vibrant Shikara rally to breathe new life into Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector. The event, a bold response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that shook the region, aimed to restore confidence among tourists and reaffirm Kashmir’s status as a safe and breathtaking destination.
Dozens of shikaras, festooned with colorful banners proclaiming messages of peace and hospitality, glided across Dal Lake, captivating onlookers and symbolizing the resilience of Kashmir’s spirit. The rally follows a challenging period for the Valley’s tourism industry, which saw a sharp decline in visitors after the tragic attack that claimed 26 lives and prompted the temporary closure of nearly 50 tourist sites.

Addressing a gathering at the lake’s edge, Apni Party President Altaf Bukhari underscored the region’s readiness to welcome tourists. “Kashmir is open, safe, and eager to share its beauty with the world. This Shikara rally is our way of telling every traveler that your safety is our priority, and your visit will support our people,” he said. Bukhari also called for urgent government aid for tourism-dependent communities, including shikara operators, hotel owners, and local artisans, who have faced severe economic hardship since the attack.
The rally’s timing is significant, with the Amarnath Yatra on the horizon, promising an economic boost for local businesses. Recent efforts, such as the reopening of 50 tourist destinations and heightened security measures, have set the stage for a tourism rebound. The Shikara rally builds on these initiatives, showcasing Dal Lake’s serene charm and the warmth of Kashmiri hospitality.
Local voices echoed Bukhari’s optimism. “This rally is a reminder of what Kashmir truly is—a paradise that welcomes all,” said Manzoor Ahmad, a veteran shikarawala. Social media buzzed with support, with one X user posting, “Dal Lake’s shikaras are back in full glory! Kashmir is healing and ready for tourists. #VisitKashmir.”
The Apni Party’s event is part of a broader push to counter the fear sown by the Pahalgam attack. Recent activities, including a shikara race on June 11, have further highlighted the region’s vibrancy. With its snow-capped mountains, pristine lakes, and rich cultural heritage, Kashmir is poised to reclaim its place as a global tourism gem.
As the shikaras docked at sunset, the rally left an indelible message: Kashmir’s heart beats strong, and its doors are wide open. Tourists are urged to rediscover the Valley, where every visit supports a community determined to rise above adversity.
