Self Help Group Pulwama | Women Start Earning From Walnut Processing Unit | Get Support From JKRLM We started the walnut processing unit in Pulwama and got a lot of support from Jammu & Kashmir NRLM. The unit helps a lot of people in Tral as it gives them employment. We got support financially and morally too. Irshad Ahmed, District Manager NRLM says, now walnut harvesting is taking place. We have given the walnut growers and Self Help Groups some technical know-how. Naseer Ahmed involved in walnut industry says, first, the walnuts are broken and the walnut kernels gathered. Then the walnut kernels are put in a machine. In the machine, the skin of walnut comes apart and the kernels come out. Then they are sold off. Around 30-40 ladies work in the walnut processing unit. Their husbands too work here. Previously, we faced difficulties and worked for longer hours. Now we get the work done fast with the technical help. Previously they used to labour with their hands and to fill one sack two persons took the whole day. Now within 15 minutes we are able to fill one sack. From that point of view the machine is good. We have facilitated them, said the District Manager NRLM. In the modern era, we have provided them technology and training so that the shelling and drying of walnuts becomes faster. Manual help is required in plucking walnuts, drying, breaking, etc. Mudasir Nabi says we bring the walnuts and the machine then does the process of taking out the skin. We try to maintain quality so that buyers are satisfied.
