Ramban, October 9, 2025 – In a colorful display of cultural festivities and community spirit, the State Bank of India Rural Self Employment Training Institute (#SBI #RSETI) #Ramban hosted a lively Mehndi competition today to mark the auspicious occasion of #KarwaChauth. The event, held at the RSETI campus in #Ramban, brought together over 50 women from nearby villages, transforming the grounds into a canvas of intricate henna designs and joyous celebrations.#KarwaChauth, a cherished Hindu festival where married women fast for the long life of their husbands, is traditionally adorned with elaborate mehndi (henna) applications symbolizing love, prosperity, and marital bliss.
This year, #SBI #RSETI seized the opportunity to blend tradition with empowerment, organizing the competition as part of its ongoing initiatives to promote women’s skill development and cultural engagement in rural Jammu and Kashmir.Under the guidance of Director S. Harvinder Singh, the event featured categories for both beginners and experts, with participants showcasing a stunning array of designs inspired by floral motifs, peacocks, moons, and traditional paisley patterns – all hallmarks of #KarwaChauth mehndi artistry. Local trainers from #SBI #RSETI, known for their expertise in tailoring and handicrafts, served as judges, evaluating entries based on creativity, precision, and thematic relevance to the festival.”We at #SBI #RSETI #Ramban are committed to not just skill-building but also fostering community bonds through such inclusive events,” said Harvinder Singh. “This Mehndi competition celebrates the essence of #KarwaChauth while empowering our rural women, many of whom are trainees in our programs. It’s heartening to see their talent shine on this special day.”The competition kicked off with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, followed by live mehndi application sessions where participants shared tips on achieving deep, long-lasting stains using natural ingredients like lemon-sugar mixtures.
As the afternoon progressed, the air filled with laughter, folk songs, and the earthy aroma of fresh henna cones. Winners received certificates of appreciation, along with small gift hampers sponsored by local artisans, recognizing their artistic prowess. This initiative aligns with #SBI #RSETI’s broader mission of rural upliftment, as seen in recent programs like the Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme in Gaitye village and Vegetable Cultivation training under Project UNNATI. By integrating cultural events like this Mehndi competition, the institute continues to create platforms for self-expression and economic independence among women in #Ramban. As the sun set, participants broke their fasts together, toasting to enduring love and stronger communities. The event not only added a festive sparkle to #KarwaChauth but also reinforced #SBI #RSETI’s role as a catalyst for holistic development in the region.
