Jammu, March 1, 2025 – The SARAS Aajeevika Mela, a vibrant showcase of rural craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, concluded at Kala Kendra in Jammu, leaving a significant mark on the region’s rural economy. Organised by the Jammu & Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission under the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, the 10-day event witnessed robust business for women Self-Help Groups from across India.
The mela, which began on February 20, featured over 220 artisans, including members of SHGs from 15 states, displaying a diverse range of handloom, handicrafts, and culinary delights. With 60 stalls highlighting products like textiles, pottery, and traditional cuisine, the event drew large crowds, including dignitaries, tourists, and locals, fostering a direct market for rural women entrepreneurs.
Dr. Shubhra Sharma, Mission Director of JKRLM, hailed the mela as a resounding success, stating, “It was not just an exhibition but a movement towards self-reliance and entrepreneurship.” She emphasized that the initiative empowered rural women by providing them a national platform to sell their products, enhance their skills, and connect with urban consumers, aligning with the broader vision of economic empowerment.
The event, which featured cultural performances and a food court showcasing regional flavors, was praised for its role in promoting both economic growth and cultural exchange. Local officials and visitors alike lauded the resilience and creativity of the SHG members, noting the mela’s contribution to the “Vocal for Local” campaign.
As the curtains fall on this year’s edition, the SARAS Aajeevika Mela has once again proven to be a catalyst for rural women’s economic independence, setting the stage for future initiatives in the region.
