Kupwara, April 13, 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir’s Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, visited the Kalaroos and Sogam areas of Kupwara district today to express heartfelt condolences to the families of young students who lost their lives in a tragic road accident this morning. The incident, which occurred in Handwara, claimed the lives of two students and left 21 others injured when a college bus overturned after the driver lost control.
The Minister, accompanied by senior officials including Advisor to Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Ayushi Sudan, and Director Health Services Kashmir Dr. Jahangir Bakshi, met with the grieving families to offer support and solidarity. Describing the loss as “deeply painful,” Itoo assured the families of the government’s full assistance, including ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh for the kin of each deceased student and comprehensive medical care for the injured.
During her visit, Itoo also inspected GMC Handwara, where she inquired about the condition of the injured students. According to the Medical Superintendent, most of the injured have been discharged after receiving treatment, with three students still under care at GMC Handwara, one at SMHS Srinagar, and one at SKIMS Srinagar. The Minister directed health authorities, including the Director SKIMS and Principal GMC Handwara, to ensure the best possible treatment for those still hospitalized.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a magisterial inquiry to investigate the cause of the fatal accident, emphasizing accountability and prevention of future tragedies. Itoo reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the affected families and enhancing road safety measures in the region.
This tragic incident has cast a shadow over Kupwara, with the community mourning the loss of promising young lives. The Minister’s visit underscores the government’s resolve to stand by the victims’ families during this difficult time.
