JAMMU, DECEMBER 03: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, highlighted the need for greater accessibility and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities, calling for an inclusive society where they can lead lives of dignity and opportunity.
She was addressing an event organized by Samagra Shiksha, J&K, at the Convention Centre here to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities-2024.
In her address, Minister Sakeena Itoo acknowledged the resilience of individuals with disabilities who continue to demonstrate remarkable strength in overcoming daily challenges. She emphasized that it is essential to provide support and create opportunities in education, healthcare, employment, and public spaces for differently-abled individuals. “They, too, have the right to live a life of dignity, just like anyone else,” she asserted.
Speaking on this year’s theme, Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future, the Minister called for the establishment of a ‘Disability Inclusive Society.’ She stressed that breaking societal stereotypes surrounding disabilities is key to building a more inclusive and accepting culture.
Sakeena Itoo also commended the differently-abled students who showcased their talents through remarkable performances during the event. “These students have shown that they are not lacking in any way but possess unique talents that deserve to be recognized and nurtured,” she said.
The Minister encouraged parents to embrace their children’s disabilities without shame, stressing that “disability should not be seen as a limitation, but as an opportunity to discover and display hidden talents.” She also praised the caregivers, parents, and families of differently-abled persons for their unwavering support. “Your dedication and love are fundamental in empowering individuals with disabilities,” she added.
Highlighting the government’s commitment, the Minister assured that the issues faced by differently-abled persons would continue to be addressed. She called on NGOs to play a more active role in utilizing government grants effectively to support the cause.
In her remarks, Principal Secretary, School Education, Suresh Kumar Gupta, stressed the importance of integrating persons with disabilities fully into society, enabling them to live, work, and thrive alongside others. He also applauded the extraordinary performances by differently-abled students.
Commissioner Secretary, Social Welfare, Sheetal Nanda, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that differently-abled students are equally talented and deserve opportunities to showcase their abilities. She described the concept of inclusive education as a significant step forward in addressing the needs of these students.
Project Director, Samagra Shiksha, in his welcome address, highlighted the global observance of the day and emphasized the need for the full participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life. He also shared the initiatives of Samagra Shiksha aimed at supporting differently-abled students.
During the event, Minister Sakeena Itoo honoured several students who brought laurels to Jammu and Kashmir at the recently held Anjali International Festival in Odisha. She also distributed medals and trophies to students excelling in sports and academics.
Additionally, the Minister distributed motorized tricycles and scooties to differently-abled beneficiaries of the Social Welfare Department, furthering the government’s commitment to empowering persons with disabilities.
The event also featured captivating cultural performances by differently-abled students, leaving the audience spellbound with their talent.
