Jammu and Kashmir, March 21, 2025 – The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a flagship initiative to provide free electricity through rooftop solar installations, has seen notable success across households in Jammu and Kashmir. Launched in February 2024, the scheme has empowered many residents with clean energy, aligning with India’s renewable energy goals. However, challenges have emerged, particularly with the functioning of rooftop solar systems in some government departments.
Dr. P.R. Dhar, an official from the Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JKEDA), highlighted that while the scheme has been a boon for domestic users, persistent technical issues are affecting solar panel performance in certain government buildings. “We urge departments and beneficiaries to report any ongoing problems to JKEDA for swift resolution,” Dr. Dhar stated, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to ensuring the scheme’s success.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims to solarize 10 million homes nationwide by 2027, with Jammu and Kashmir playing a key role due to its immense solar potential. Over 80,000 households in the Union Territory have already adopted rooftop solar, supported by subsidies and JKEDA’s efforts. Yet, the reported issues underscore the need for improved maintenance and oversight to maximize the scheme’s impact.
As the region progresses toward complete solarization of government buildings by December 2025, JKEDA remains focused on addressing these hurdles, ensuring that both households and public institutions benefit from this transformative renewable energy initiative.
