Srinagar, August 12, 2025 – As Jammu and Kashmir gears up for India’s Independence Day celebrations on August 15, security across the region has been significantly bolstered with multi-layered measures to ensure a peaceful and secure environment. This marks the first Independence Day since the formation of an elected government in J&K following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, prompting heightened vigilance across all 20 districts, particularly in sensitive and border areas.
According to senior security officials, a comprehensive security apparatus has been deployed, including drones, high-resolution CCTV cameras, and fortified checkpoints to monitor key event venues and major entry points in Srinagar and other district headquarters. “Sensitive zones in Kashmir are under strict surveillance with road blockades, vehicle checks, security cordons, and search operations,” a senior official stated. Extensive deployments of police and paramilitary forces have been made along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC), with senior officers overseeing coordination to prevent any subversive activities.
In Srinagar, drones and CCTVs are actively monitoring public spaces and critical locations, including venues for flag-hoisting ceremonies and parades.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Birdi, emphasized the robustness of the arrangements, stating, “Multi-tier security measures are in place to ensure smooth and peaceful Independence Day celebrations.” Checkpoints have been strategically set up, with random vehicle checks and frisking operations intensified to curb the movement of anti-social elements. Night patrolling and cordon-and-search operations (CASOs) have also been ramped up across vulnerable areas.
The security measures follow a high-level review meeting chaired by IGP Birdi at the Police Control Room Kashmir, where instructions were issued to strengthen checkpoints during night hours and maintain strict vigilance against potential threats. This heightened security comes in the context of recent encounters in areas like Kulgam, where drones, helicopters, and para commandos were deployed to neutralize terrorist threats, underscoring the region’s proactive approach to counter-terrorism.
The administration has also encouraged public participation in Independence Day events, with open invitations to flag-hoisting ceremonies at venues like Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar. The measures reflect a blend of advanced technology, including AI-based facial recognition systems on highways, and traditional policing to ensure safety while fostering a sense of unity and patriotism in the region.
