Srinagar, April 18, 2025 – The Rajbagh Jhelum Riverfront, a flagship initiative of the Srinagar Smart City Project, has transformed into a scenic urban oasis with the recent plantation of almond and cherry trees, enhancing the aesthetic and ecological appeal of the 6-km stretch. The vibrant blooms along the riverfront have captivated residents and visitors alike, earning widespread praise for the project’s contribution to Srinagar’s urban rejuvenation and tourism potential.
Launched under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ Smart Cities Mission in 2017, the Srinagar Smart City Project aims to modernise infrastructure while preserving the city’s cultural heritage. The Rajbagh Riverfront, inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in May 2023, features pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks, green spaces, Wi-Fi connectivity, and planned amenities like cafes and a library.
The plantation initiative aligns with the project’s focus on sustainability and eco-friendly urban development. Chief Engineer Iftikhar Kakroo noted that the riverfront’s design emphasises green spaces and landscaping to promote public health and tourism. Locals, including Srinagar resident Altaf Ahmad, have lauded the transformation, with many expressing excitement over the area’s potential as a recreational hub. Social media posts have celebrated the blooming trees, crediting the Srinagar Smart City Limited for its vision.
The riverfront’s upgrades, part of a Rs 75-crore project, include modern drainage systems, illumination, and public amenities, making it a model of urban excellence. The initiative also supports local tourism by offering spaces for leisure and cultural activities, aligning with Srinagar’s UNESCO Creative City status for crafts and folk arts. As the Smart City Project progresses, with 55 of 125 planned projects completed by June 2023, Rajbagh stands as a testament to Srinagar’s evolving identity as a vibrant, sustainable urban centre.
