Kashmir , May 6, 2025 – In a significant show of solidarity, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 5, condemning the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians, predominantly tourists. Putin called for swift justice against the perpetrators and their backers, reinforcing Russia’s unwavering support for India’s battle against terrorism.
The attack, carried out by four heavily armed terrorists, including two from Pakistan, targeted civilians in the scenic Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam. The assailants selectively attacked after verifying victims’ religious identities, sparking outrage across India. “This barbaric act demands that those responsible face the full force of justice,” Putin reportedly told Modi, according to sources close to the discussion.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the call stating, “President Putin expressed deep condolences for the Pahalgam tragedy and reaffirmed Russia’s solidarity with India in combating terrorism.” The conversation, initiated by Moscow, underscored the deep India-Russia bond, with both leaders vowing to strengthen their Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.
PM Narendra Modi, in turn, thanked Putin for his support and extended warm wishes for Russia’s 80th Victory Day anniversary. He invited Putin to the upcoming India-Russia Summit, an invitation the Russian leader accepted, signalling continued high-level engagement.
Putin’s strong condemnation aligns with India’s stance on an “uncompromising” response to terrorism, contrasting with calls for restraint from some Western and Gulf nations. The attack has escalated India-Pakistan tensions, with New Delhi suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and sealing the Attari border crossing in response to alleged Pakistani involvement.
Posts on X have amplified the significance of Putin’s remarks, with users praising Russia’s firm stance. “Putin’s call to PM Modi sends a clear message: terrorism has no place in a civilized world,” one user wrote. The conversation also highlighted the resilience of India-Russia ties amid global geopolitical shifts.
As India weighs further diplomatic and military measures, Putin’s endorsement bolsters its resolve to hold the perpetrators accountable. The call sets the stage for closer collaboration between New Delhi and Moscow, both in counter-terrorism and strategic cooperation.
