Pulwama, January 19,2026- Bilal Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Murran village in Pulwama district, has emerged as a successful example of sustainable entrepreneurship by shifting from the education sector to organic farming, creating livelihood opportunities for local families.
After completing his postgraduation and B.Ed, Bilal spent nearly a decade working in a private educational institute. Seeking a more sustainable and community-oriented path, he later ventured into organic agriculture. Along with his younger brother, who holds an MSc in Biotechnology, Bilal began producing vermicompost, a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that supports eco-friendly farming practices.
The initiative has steadily grown and is now providing livelihood support to nearly 20 households in the area. Their vermicompost production not only promotes chemical-free farming but also encourages farmers to adopt environmentally sustainable methods, contributing to improved soil health and agricultural productivity.
Locals have appreciated the brothers’ efforts, terming the initiative a model of rural self-employment and innovation. The venture highlights the potential of organic farming and agri-entrepreneurship in strengthening the rural economy of Pulwama while creating employment at the grassroots level.
