Pulwama, September 14, 2025 – In a significant step toward ensuring public health, the District Project Management Unit (DPMU) under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Pulwama has launched a comprehensive campaign to prevent waterborne diseases. The initiative, which began today, focuses on on-spot water quality analysis at households (HHs), water sources, schools, and Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) to ensure the delivery of safe drinking water across the district.Amid recent floods and heavy rainfall, which heighten the risk of contamination, the campaign employs real-time testing to identify and address potential hazards in water supplies. The goal is to curb outbreaks of diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid, which pose significant threats, particularly in rural and flood-affected areas.
The campaign integrates WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) education, emphasising proper water storage, boiling techniques, and sanitation practices to empower communities.On-the-Ground ActionOn the inaugural day, over 500 households and water sources underwent testing using portable kits to assess pH, turbidity, chlorine levels, and microbial contamination. Teams comprising health department officials and JJM lab staff conducted these tests, ensuring immediate action, such as chlorination or source remediation, where issues were detected. “Access to clean water is a fundamental right.
This campaign is a proactive measure to prevent health crises,” said Dr. Basharat Qayoom, Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama, during a review meeting.Awareness drives form a core component of the initiative. Interactive sessions in schools and AWCs educated residents, particularly children and caregivers, on recognizing symptoms of waterborne illnesses and maintaining hygiene standards. These efforts target vulnerable populations in flood-prone villages, where water contamination risks are higher.Collaborative EffortThe campaign is a multi-departmental endeavor, involving the Jal Shakti Department, Irrigation, Education, and Social Welfare sectors. This synergy ensures comprehensive coverage, from testing to community engagement.
The initiative aligns with national objectives under the Swachh Bharat Mission and JJM, which have reduced waterborne disease incidences across India through sustainable water management practices. Similar efforts in neighboring districts like Kulgam have demonstrated success in minimizing post-flood outbreaks.Community Engagement and SupportResidents are encouraged to report water quality concerns via the JJM helpline (1800-XXX-XXXX) or through local ASHA workers. Regular updates on the campaign’s progress will be shared via the official X handle @dpmujjmpulwama.This campaign underscores Pulwama’s commitment to public health and sustainable water access, setting a model for other districts facing similar challenges. By combining rigorous testing with community education, the initiative aims to ensure that every household in Pulwama has access to safe, potable water.
