Pulwama, January 12,2026-Apple growers in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have welcomed the opening of new Controlled Atmosphere cold store chambers, calling it a major boost for the horticulture sector as rising market prices improve returns for farmers.
The newly operational CA cold storage facility is enabling apple growers to store their produce scientifically, helping them maintain fruit quality for longer periods and avoid distress sales immediately after harvest. With the ability to release apples in phases, farmers are now better positioned to take advantage of favorable market conditions across the country.
Local orchardists said the availability of modern storage infrastructure has transformed post-harvest management. “Earlier, we were forced to sell apples soon after harvest due to lack of proper storage. Now, with CA chambers, we can wait for better prices and supply the market gradually,” said an apple grower from Pulwama.
Experts note that CA storage regulates oxygen, carbon dioxide, temperature, and humidity levels, significantly slowing the ripening process and reducing post-harvest losses. This scientific method not only preserves the texture, color, and taste of apples but also extends their shelf life by several months.
Officials from the horticulture department said the initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen cold chain infrastructure in Kashmir, which produces a major share of India’s apples. They added that improved storage facilities are crucial for enhancing farmers’ incomes and ensuring consistent supply to domestic and export markets.
With apple prices showing an upward trend this season, growers believe that access to CA cold stores will help stabilise the market, reduce gluts, and improve overall profitability. The Pulwama facility is expected to benefit hundreds of orchardists in the region and contribute to the sustainable growth of Kashmir’s apple industry.
