Kashmir , 28 September 2025- In the 126th episode of Mann Ki Baat on September 28, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Lieutenant Commander Roopa A and Lieutenant Commander Dilna K, two Indian Navy women officers set to embark on the historic Navika Sagar Parikrama-II, a global circumnavigation aboard INSV Tarini. Addressing the nation at 11:00 AM IST, Modi praised the duo’s upcoming expedition as a beacon of Nari Shakti (women’s power), maritime heritage, and India’s growing stature in global ocean sailing. The broadcast, aired live on All India Radio, Doordarshan, and digital platforms, resonated with themes of adventure, resilience, and gender equality.
PM Narendra Modi’s Inspiring Words
During today’s Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi highlighted the significance of the Indian Navy’s efforts to revive sailing traditions through Navika Sagar Parikrama-II. He said, “Lieutenant Commander Roopa A and Lieutenant Commander Dilna K are about to embark on an extraordinary journey to circumnavigate the globe on INSV Tarini. These daughters of India embody courage and skill, carrying our tricolour across the seas. Their voyage will inspire millions, showcasing that Indian women can conquer any challenge.” He emphasised the expedition’s role in promoting seamanship and gender inclusivity, noting the Navy’s legacy with sail training ships INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini, and previous circumnavigations by INSV Mhadei and INSV Tarini.
A Grueling Voyage Ahead
The Navika Sagar Parikrama-II, set to commence shortly from Goa, is a testament to the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime excellence. Lt Cdr Roopa A and Lt Cdr Dilna K, part of a six-member all-women crew, have honed their skills through rigorous training under Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd.), a Golden Globe Race hero. Their prior expeditions include a trans-oceanic voyage from Goa to Rio de Janeiro via Cape Town last year, a double-handed sailing trip from Goa to Port Blair, and a dual-handed sortie to Port Louis, Mauritius earlier this year. These experiences, spanning thousands of miles, have prepared them for the demanding 23,400-nautical-mile journey, which will test their physical fitness, mental alertness, and seamanship.
Symbol of Maritime Heritage and Equality
PM Modi also spotlighted the expedition’s logo, unveiled by the Indian Navy, which features an octagonal center symbolizing the Navy, a sun and compass for celestial navigation, and a sailboat representing adventure and resilience. He remarked, “This logo captures the spirit of our sailors navigating vast oceans. The all-women crew of INSV Tarini reflects India’s commitment to gender equality and excellence on the global stage.”
Indian Navy’s Maritime Legacy
The Indian Navy has long championed ocean sailing, with INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini fostering seamanship, and the first Navika Sagar Parikrama (2017-18) setting a precedent for all-women expeditions. Modi noted, “Through Navika Sagar Parikrama-II, our Navy is not only preserving our maritime heritage but also showcasing India’s leadership in global maritime endeavors.”
A National Inspiration
In today’s address, Modi encouraged young Indians, particularly women, to draw inspiration from Lt Cdr Roopa A and Lt Cdr Dilna K. “Their journey is a reminder that no ocean is too vast, no storm too fierce, when determination drives you,” he said. The episode also featured listener messages praising the officers’ courage, reinforcing the expedition’s role in uniting the nation.
