Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z Morh Tunnel in Sonmarg, Jammu and Kashmir. This 6.5-kilometer tunnel, part of the Srinagar-Leh Highway, is designed to provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonmarg, which was often cut off in winter due to heavy snowfall. The tunnel reduces travel time significantly, making it easier for civilians and defense personnel to move through the region. The tunnel has great strategic importance, enhancing national security by ensuring quicker movement of military forces and supplies. It also promises to boost the local economy by improving access to Sonmarg, a popular tourist destination, and facilitating trade and commerce. The project is expected to create job opportunities for locals and improve services like healthcare and education by reducing isolation during harsh weather conditions. Despite challenges posed by difficult terrain and extreme weather, the Z Morh Tunnel was completed ahead of schedule, showcasing India’s growing infrastructure capabilities. This development is part of a broader effort to modernise Jammu and Kashmir’s infrastructure, ensuring better connectivity, security, and economic growth for the region.
