Katra , January 13,2026-With a steady rise in footfall at the revered Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, tourism across Katra and its adjoining destinations has witnessed a significant upswing, bringing renewed economic activity to the region. The surge in pilgrim arrivals has had a cascading effect on nearby religious and tourist spots, revitalising local businesses and strengthening livelihoods dependent on the tourism ecosystem.
According to officials and local stakeholders, increased pilgrim inflow has translated into higher occupancy rates in hotels, guest houses, and lodges, while transport operators, pony owners, shopkeepers, and small vendors are experiencing improved earnings. Areas such as Bhairon Ghati, Ardhkuwari, Banganga, Patnitop, Shiv Khori, and the scenic locales of Reasi district have also reported a noticeable increase in visitor numbers.
Shopkeepers in Katra say the rise in pilgrim movement has boosted sales of souvenirs, religious offerings, food items, and daily essentials. “The pilgrimage season has brought back business momentum after a relatively slow period. With more yatris extending their stay to explore nearby destinations, the overall economy is benefiting,” said a local trader.
Tourism officials attribute the growth to improved infrastructure, better road connectivity, enhanced facilities along the pilgrimage route, and effective promotion of lesser-known destinations around Katra. The focus on cleanliness, safety, and crowd management has further enhanced the experience for pilgrims and tourists alike.
Hoteliers and tour operators are optimistic that the trend will continue in the coming months, especially with upcoming festivals and the peak pilgrimage season. The sustained inflow of visitors is expected to generate employment opportunities and support long-term economic stability in the region.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage continues to serve not only as a spiritual journey for millions of devotees but also as a vital driver of tourism-led development across Katra and neighbouring areas.
