Kashmir , May 14, 2025 – Pakistan Rangers handed over Border Security Force jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw to Indian authorities today at the Joint Check Post in Attari, Amritsar, following his detention since April 23, 2025. The constable, who inadvertently crossed into Pakistan territory while on duty in the Ferozepur sector of Punjab, was returned unharmed at 10:30 AM, adhering to established protocols.
Shaw’s wife, Rajani Shaw, expressed immense relief, telling India Today, “It’s good news. I’m so happy he’s back safe.” Her emotional response followed weeks of uncertainty, during which she traveled from Rishra to Pathankot to seek clarity on her husband’s condition and urge authorities for his safe return.
The handover comes amid a recent India-Pakistan ceasefire, which has de-escalated tensions along the border after a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, and India’s military response, Operation Sindoor. The truce facilitated not only Shaw’s release but also the resumption of Hajj pilgrimage flights from Srinagar.
The BSF and Indian authorities commended Pakistan’s compliance with bilateral protocols, ensuring Shaw’s safe return without incident. The event underscores the importance of diplomatic channels in resolving cross-border issues, even amidst strained relations.
