Srinagar, June 24, 2025 – Pahalgam, the picturesque hill station in South Kashmir, is once again teeming with visitors, signaling a robust revival of tourism, according to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. In a recent X post, Abdullah shared his optimism, stating, “Pahalgam’s streets, once eerily quiet after the tragic terror attack, are now alive with tourists and locals alike, soaking in the cool breeze and scenic beauty.”
The region faced a severe setback on April 22, 2025, when a terror attack at Baisaran meadow claimed 26 lives, including 25 tourists and a local pony operator. The incident led to the temporary closure of 48 tourist spots across the Kashmir Valley, dampening the region’s vibrant tourism sector. However, concerted efforts by the Abdullah-led government have turned the tide.
Omar Abdullah’s hands-on approach has been instrumental. In late May, he cycled through Pahalgam’s markets, engaging with local vendors and tour operators to rebuild trust. A high-level meeting in Gulmarg followed, focusing on strategies to restore tourism, while a symbolic cabinet meeting in Pahalgam underscored the government’s resolve. “Seeing Pahalgam bustling again is heartening. Our efforts are paying off, and the local economy is feeling the positive impact,” Abdullah remarked.
The launch of Kashmir’s first Vande Bharat train has significantly boosted accessibility, drawing tourists from across India. Since June 14, key attractions like Betab Valley, Verinag Garden, and Kokernag Garden have reopened, welcoming visitors in phases. Local businesses report a surge in activity, with hotels, shops, and tour operators regaining momentum.
The revival extends beyond Pahalgam. Gulmarg and other destinations are also seeing increased footfall, supported by enhanced infrastructure and safety measures. “Tourism doesn’t just bring revenue; it fosters peace and stability,” said a local guide in Pahalgam
As Jammu and Kashmir reclaims its status as a premier tourist destination, Abdullah’s leadership and strategic initiatives are proving pivotal in restoring confidence and revitalising the region’s economy.
